The Atlanta Hawks lost to the Boston Celtics 83-80 on the road. With the loss, the Hawks lost their best-of-seven first round playoffs series with the Celtics 4-2 and have been eliminated from the 2012 NBA Playoffs. The starters for the Hawks were Jeff Teague and Joe Johnson in the backcourt, Marvin Williams and Josh Smith at the two forward positions, and Al Horford at center. The leading scorer for the Hawks was Josh Smith, with 18 points. He also grabbed nine boards, nearly a double-double. Joe Johnson added 17 points. Marvin Williams contributed 16 points and eight rebounds. Al Horford nearly had a double-double, with 15 points and nine boards. The leading scorer for the Celtics was Kevin Garnett, with a game-high 28 points. In the first quarter, the Hawks took a 23-20 lead. In the second quarter, the Celtics went on a 16-0 run, and took a 47-41 halftime lead over the Hawks. In the third quarter, the Hawks outscored the Celtics 22-20, and cut their deficit down to 67-63 heading into the final frame. In the fourth quarter, down by eight, the Hawks went on a 14-2 run, but a missed free-throw at the end gave the game away. I think the key to this loss was points in the paint. The Celtics outscored the Hawks 42-30 in that category. Tough way to end the season for the Hawks, but they fought hard.
