The Atlanta Hawks beat the Miami Heat 92-79 in a matinee matchup at home at Philips Arena for their preseason opener. With the win, the Hawks improved to 1-0 in the preseason. The starters for the Hawks were Jeff Teague and DeShawn Stevenson in the backcourt, Kyle Korver and Josh Smith at the two forward positions, and Al Horford at center. Devin Harris (right knee) and Zaza Pachulia (groin) did not dress. The leading scorer for the Hawks was Josh Smith, with 21 points. Louis Williams added 18 points off the bench. DeShawn Stevenson contributed 11 points. The leading scorer for the Heat was Chris Bosh, with a game-high 22 points. In the first quarter, the Hawks were outscored 26-19. In the second quarter, the Hawks went on a 14-5 run and took a 47-45 halftime lead over the Heat. In the third quarter, the Hawks outscored the Heat 23-21 to extend their lead to 70-66 heading into the final frame. In the fourth quarter, the Hawks held the Heat to just 13 points to secure the 13-point victory. I think the key to this game was defense. The Hawks had 13 steals and forced 22 Heat turnovers. I think Coach Larry Drew was able to rotate guys very quickly, so he could assess as many different players in different situations as possible. Great win for the Hawks against the division-rival defending champion Heat.
