The Atlanta Hawks fell to the San Antonio Spurs 82-76 at COX Pavilion at the University of Nevada Las Vegas tonight. This was the second of five NBA Summer League games for the Hawks. With the loss tonight, the Hawks dropped to 1-1 in the Summer League. The starters for the Hawks tonight were Brad Wanamaker and John Jenkins in the backcourt, John Shurna and Mike Scott at the two forward positions, and Keith Benson at center. The leading scorer for the Hawks was Keith Benson, with 20 points. He also grabbed six boards. John Jenkins added 13 points. The leading scorer for the Spurs was Kawhi Leonard, with a game-high 23 points. In the first quarter, the Hawks held the Spurs to just 11 points. In the second quarter, however, the Hawks allowed the Spurs to score 34 points, and the Hawks went to the break trailing the Spurs 45-39. In the third quarter, the Hawks outscored the Spurs 21-13, and they regained the lead over the Spurs heading into the final frame, 60-58. In the fourth quarter, the Spurs outscored the Hawks 24-16, and the Hawks lost by six. I think the key reason the Hawks lost was free-throw shooting. They shot just 63.6% at the charity stripe. Had they made all eight free throws they missed, they would've beaten the Spurs 84-82. Tough loss for the Hawks in a game that came down to the final minutes.
