Hawks vs. Timberwolves Preview
The Atlanta Hawks will take on the Minnesota Timberwolves today at home at Philips Arena in the annual MLK Day matinee game. This will be second and final game in the regular season series with the Timberwolves for the Hawks. With a win today, the Hawks would improve to 23-18 on the season and 1-1 in the regular season series with the Timberwolves. The probable starters for the Hawks today are Jeff Teague and Kyle Korver in the backcourt, Josh Smith and Al Horford at the two forward positions, and Zaza Pachulia at center. Anthony Morrow (sore lower back) and DeShawn Stevenson (sore right knee) are listed as game-time decisions. Devin Harris (sprained left ankle) is listed as questionable. Louis Williams (torn ACL, right knee) is listed as out. I think there are two keys to a win today for the Hawks. The first is to not underestimate this Timberwolves team just because they have a losing record and have a lot of injuries. They have already proven they can beat the Hawks this year, and the Hawks also have a lot of injuries, so there should be no reason to underestimate them. The Hawks need to play them with as much intensity and energy as they would bring against the Oklahoma City Thunder or Miami Heat, no matter who steps out on the court for the Timberwolves. Secondly, the Timberwolves are the worst outside shooting team in the league, so the Hawks should bait them with outside shots by protecting the middle. If the Timberwolves start hitting from distance, then the Hawks should play them tighter out there. However, if they don't start falling, the Hawks should stick with that initial plan and let them jack up as many from distance as they want.
