The Atlanta Hawks beat the Washington Wizards 102-82 today at COX Pavilion at the University of Nevada Las Vegas in a matinee matchup. This was the first of five NBA Summer League games for the Hawks this summer. With the win today, the Hawks improved to 1-0 in the Summer League. The starters for the Hawks today were Brad Wanamaker and John Jenkins in the backcourt, John Shurna and Mike Scott at the two forward positions, and Keith Benson at center. The Hawks were lead by Keith Benson and John Jenkins, who scored 19 points apiece. Benson also grabbed six boards. Brad Wanamaker added 13 points and six assists. Frank Hassell contributed 10 points and six rebounds. The leading scorer for the Wizards was Bradley Beal, with a game-high 22 points. In the first quarter, the Hawks outscored the Wizards 23-15. In the second quarter, the Hawks went on a 22-6 run, and went to halftime with a 49-34 lead over the Wizards. In the third quarter, the Hawks outscored the Wizards 28-23 to extend their lead to 77-57 heading into the final frame. The Hawks and the Wizards each scored 25 points in the fourth quarter, and the Hawks came away with the 20-point victory. I think the key to the win today for the Hawks was points in the paint. The Hawks outscored the Wizards 46-24 in that category. They really played great inside-out ball offensively. They dominated the paint on offense, but they also shot well from beyond the arc, with three-point specialist Jenkins shooting 4/5 from long range. Great win for the Hawks against a division rival to begin their Summer League this year.
